Buyer’s Guide for Cordless Shades

More people than ever are interested in cordless shades. They want a clean look that is only available in the absence of cords. Additionally, homeowners are increasingly conscious of safety issues and cordless shades deliver unparalleled safety in an affordable way.

I get a lot of questions about the functionality of today’s cordless shades. There was a time when cordless shades were more hassle than they were worth. Be assured, the functionality of cordless control has never been better. Technology has given us a much better product than we have had in the past. With zero gravity systems, double clutch breaking and other innovations, cordless controls are as eliable and they are elegant in their function.

If you are thinking about cordless shades here are a few things to keep in mind.

  • Can you reach the top of the window? Window schedules are increasingly large and ceiling heights seem to grow every year. A cordless shade won’t do you much good if you can’t reach the shade to operate it. If the top of your window is more than about 7 feet from the floor you may want to consider a motorized control option.
  • Is the window too large for a cordless shade? This will vary depending on the product but if your window is greater than 8 feet wide there is a pretty good chance that a cordless shade will not be the right solution. Cordless control mechanisms work on springs and tension. If you get too much weight on them they won’t operate correctly as a result, manufacturers limit them to a certain width or square footage to ensure proper function.
  • Do you have a door? Most homes have at least one door that leads to the patio, or back porch, most of these doors have a glass opening. Cordless shades are a perfect solution for these doors. To make the experience even better consider adding a magnet and strike plate to the shade and door instead of hold down brackets. This will allow you to retain the full functionality of your shade and avoid the bottom rail banging on the door every time you open and close it.
